You push a girl out of schools and you push her into the streets; you push her into violence; you push her into trauma.
Susan Burton of A New Way of Life Reentry Project from Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools by Dr. Monique W. Morris and Jacoba Atlas
This month, I am continuing the conversations about Black girls being criminalized in schools at high rates with Kaneka Turner and Dr. Tyff about how they center Black girls and women in education and the justice system.
Kaneka Turner is a 22-year veteran educator specializing in elementary math education. Kaneka is currently the Lead Grade 4 Curriculum Writer for Illustrative Mathematics. She also founded #BlackWomenRockMath, an online “collective of hidden voices in math education” to empower Black women and girls to share their experiences and expertise.
Dr. Tyffani Monford Dent is a licensed psychologist, motivational speaker, and author focused on sexual violence prevention and intervention. Dr. Tyffani founded Centering Sisters, a movement focused on centering the experiences of Black women and girls to create a space for dialogue and healing.
